Summit Orthopaedics proud to offer osseointegration, an advanced surgical solution that is transforming the lives of amputees by providing a more natural, stable, and functional connection between the body and a prosthetic limb.

Osseointegration Q & A

What Is Osseointegration?

Osseointegration is a surgical procedure that directly anchors a titanium implant into the bone of an amputated limb. Unlike traditional socket-based prosthetics, which rely on the soft tissue of the residual limb, osseointegration allows a prosthetic limb to attach securely to the skeleton through an implant that extends through the skin. This creates a direct structural and functional link between the prosthesis and the body.

Benefits of Osseointegration

  • Improved Comfort: Eliminates the pain, skin breakdown, and discomfort associated with socket prostheses.
  • Greater Mobility: Allows for more natural limb movement and improved gait mechanics.
  • Enhanced Proprioception: Provides sensory feedback from the prosthetic limb, known as "osseoperception."
  • Better Fit & Stability: Avoids problems with volume fluctuations in the residual limb.
  • Faster Donning and Doffing: Attaching and removing the prosthesis is quick and easy—no liners, socks, or suction systems required.

Who Is a Candidate?

Osseointegration may be an option for individuals with:

  • Above and below-knee amputations (trans-femoral or trans-tibial)
  • Above and below-elbow amputations (trans-humeral or trans-forearm)
  • Poor socket tolerance or chronic skin issues
  • Active lifestyles that demand higher functionality
  • Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) and other neuropathic symptoms

Each case is individually evaluated to ensure optimal safety and success.

The Procedure

At Summit Orthopaedics, we use press-fit implants that are typically performed in a one stage procedure.

  1. Implantation: A titanium implant is surgically inserted into the remaining bone. If indicated, neuromas and excessive soft tissue are managed during the same operation.
  2. Progressive Weight Bearing: Use of the single-stage press-fit implant allows for almost immediate initiating of weight bearing at 4-6 weeks after implantation.
  3. Prosthetic Attachment: Once fully weight bearing with a lightweight stomper, a full prosthetic can be attached for regular use.

Rehabilitation and physical therapy are essential parts of the process to build strength, coordination, and confidence.
